Why are we planning and what are we plotting here?

When we started out in conceiving the idea to our first application, we wanted the name to be something that is descriptive to what the application will be doing. Basically in a nut shell, the application will be an easy-to-use web based interior planning/floor planning application. Obviously, the constraints will be on what is available and not already taken on the .com domain.

We ’settled’ on planNplot.com. Settled being the operative word. This is because although it was quite catchy and friends and family liked it, there was this bubbling feeling just north of my gut that the right name will still come later on…

But we needed to start on something and start pitching to potential investors already. So we decided to stick with our choice and started “selling” on planNplot.com.

However, the problem with planNplot is that although descriptive, it still has other non related connotations to it. For example it sounds like we are secretively scheming and plotting to plan something sinister (although it’ll be cool, but we’re not… seriously!!…). Also, people keep getting the order of the plan and the plot mixed up and that was quite annoying…

The problem with being too descriptive as well is that it sort of limits the evolution of the application/business model as we move forward. The thing with technology start-ups is that most of the time you are dealing with new technology/service model with a non proven business model. So things will change and it should change fast. Startups that can quickly adapt and operate on an agile and dynamic environment have a better chance to succeed. While putting in processes and work-flows in place for an agile operating environment, we obviously do not want to be constrained and limited on what we can evolve to by the branding of our application.

The good thing about still being in stealth mode and very early into our development process is that we still have the luxury to change the brand and name of our product without any serious repercussions. You would obviously require a lot more going into the thought and decision process for changing a brand name after you have launched.

Enter brand.ver.2 of our first application: klikid.com

I like this one much better! It’s catchy, it’s simple, and it is still descriptive in the ‘id’ part of klikid for interior design/decorator although it doesn’t necessarily have to mean that. The arrangement of the letters (two ‘k’s and two ‘i’s) also seems to look good as a logo.

So it looks like we will retire planNplot.com and lay it to sleep. Unless we find another business model that would fit perfectly into the brand in the future (maybe I’ll use it as the domain to host this or any future blogs later on…). So, as an ode to our first ‘brand name’ and the first expense item (domain registration) of UrekaLabs, this blog is born and aptly named…

Will ‘klikid’ be the final brand for our first application as we move forward? I don’t know. But I’m definitely not going to say that this is it! we won’t change it anymore.

We’ll just see what the brand fairy will bring as we grow…
